ABB is seeking a Business Unit IP Counsel (BU IPC) for Switzerland, who will be responsible for leading, developing and managing intellectual property portfolios, strategy and client activities for one or more business units (BUs) while supporting Group Function IP functional excellence initiatives including managing operations, budgets, and portfolio growth for assigned areas, lead/support assigned IP efforts with our research teams, and drive continued transformation with a business solutions focus and results.



Tasks

- Lead, develop, and drive intellectual property activities, lifecycle, portfolio development, and strategy for assigned BUs including: providing direction for and driving external licensing/litigation opportunities; developing IP strategies and leading in their execution; and delivering value through timely, strategic, and quality client counseling on IP issues. Responsible for delivering and aligning targets, workflow, and budgets for assigned BUs. Being the primary interface between the BU and the IP service providers as IP issues and needs arise
- Develop IP playbooks for assigned BUs for reducing risk, leveraging portfolio assets, and enhancing the value of technologies and IP portfolios of ABB, tactically and strategically: assess technology roadmaps, competitive IP positions, 3rd party technology opportunities, partner/supplier positons, competitor markets/locations, and industry direction
- Lead IP processes with inventors, engineers, product managers, BU managers, and BU-based patent support teams to deliver IP value for the assigned BUs
- Drive, lead, coordinate, and manage IP activities handled by Centers of Excellence (COEs) and law firms for assigned BUs; lead the analytical initiatives for assigned BUs; and proactively overcoming challenges and/or conflicts resulting from process, policy, and/or organizational changes
- Mentor, manage, communicate, and continually improve patent quality and efficiencies; ensure best IP practices supporting ABB’s global IP strategy and IP activities for assigned BUs, including the qualitative, quantitative, and timely contribution and relentless execution of related IP activities by self and the other supporting team members of the GF-IP structure and law firms, in coordination with special assignments of team members of COEs: IP litigation, licensing, conflicts, software issues, patent creation, competitive assessment, innovation, and portfolio support, IP clearance and risk assessment opinions, antitrust compliance for technology transfers, M&A, IP data management, IP education and awareness, product trademark, copyright, and trade secret protection and management, standards and policies, and other IP initiatives often involving complex situations and technologies
- Lead invention and patent activities for the assigned BUs ensuring achievement of strategic goals and BU-specific budgets, timelines, and technology portfolios
- Lead and educate BU and technology teams in IP Education by developing, providing, and instilling an integrated IP culture through educational sessions, invention creation initiatives, and attending to all details in the IP transactions, confidentiality matters, licensing, and other IP services for the assigned BUs
- Lead, develop, and manage the BU’s efforts in IP licenses, relations, and agreements with others, third party relations and inquiries, publications, as well as develop strategic pathways for future growth and opportunity aligned with the business objectives
- Lead, assist/draft, and negotiate in timely manner IP-centric agreements (including ownership, licensing, and indemnification guidance), engage in IP acquisition and divestments, university research and inbound and outbound license agreements, and open source programs, as needed to support assigned BUs
- Provide IP guidance and counsel stemming from company and business issues, including M&A activities, strategic innovation programs, university relations, inventor programs, confidentiality programs, and employment-related issues
- Timely and completely provide forecasts and budgets, and risk/success issues for assigned BUs and for the benefit of the global performance of ABB
- Achieve and deliver, with relentless execution, self and team’s targets within budgets and timing as agreed to with leadership team; provide dedicated support, contribute and/or lead assigned projects, programs, and assessments as assigned
- Support the IP Senior Leadership Team (IPSLT) to establish a world-class operating environment, acting as an owner, while mentoring and leading others in IP initiatives, activities, and education with respect and courtesy


Requirements

- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, Physics, or other relevant area
- Must have proven successes in developing valuable Intellectual Property (IP) and IP portfolios involving complex technologies resulting in measurable business growth and impact, preferably in a competitive six sigma/lean environment; must be experienced/ capable of writing patent applications internally for managing patent quality output of external counsels and service providers to support the IP business operations
- Technology management experience particularly in inventor-facing and strategy-oriented aspects involving technology roadmaps, competitive IP assessment, invention development, state of art/field analytics, and reverse engineering
- Direct involvement in IP clearance/opinion, freedom-to-operate processes, competitive claim assessment, design-around activities, pre-litigation/licensing/litigation activities, and patentability review committee leadership with business impact
- Direct responsibility and providing business leaders clear advice on and attending to patent applications and prosecution, portfolio development and ownership, contracts, licensing, technology agreements, software development, systems integration, etc.
- Flexible, self-driven and possess a positive outlook with an innovative and creative spirit
- Excellent command in English (verbally and in writing), German as an advantage
