Introduction Computing Engineer in the Information Technologies Departement (IT), Storage Group (ST), Tapes, Archives and Backup (TAB) section. The Storage Group (ST) within CERN's IT Department ensures a coherent development and operation of storage services at CERN for all aspects of physics data. A key responsibility of the Group is the development and operation of the multi petabyte-scale archive and backup solutions for the high-energy physics community. These include the tape-based CERN Advanced Storage Manager (CASTOR, http://cern.ch/castor (link is external)) - currently holding over 160 Petabytes of data - and backup using Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). These facilities are all fully integrated in the LHC Computing Grid, the world's largest Grid for scientific computing. You will join the Tapes, Archives and Backup (TAB) section of ST group, which runs 9 enterprise tape libraries with 140 leading-edge tape drives, and holding over 25,000 tapes. These tape drives are connected to our Linux-based CASTOR and TSM servers using fiber channel links and SAN networks. Data storage is growing by up to 70 Petabytes / year and are expected to augment by an order of magnitude over the next few years. Functions As a member of the IT Storage Group, you will: Participate in the configuration, operation and evolution of CERN's tape-based archive and backup services provided by CASTOR and TSM. Contribute to the evolution, redesign and development of the tape archive software and its integration with the rest of the storage solutions portfolio provided by the group, in particular EOS (http://cern.ch/eos (link is external)). Develop, improve and maintain automation software and monitoring / diagnostic tools. Interact with users, external service suppliers and support companies. Resolve data unavailability incidents as a member of the 3rd-level support team and escalate issues to developers or vendors as necessary. Document system components, best practices for deployment and the analysis of deployment problems together with other members of the IT Storage group and the user community. Qualification required Master's degree in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics or a closely related field, or equivalent. Experience and competencies The experience required for this post is: Excellent understanding of the Linux operating system administration, RedHat Enterprise Linux in particular. Demonstrated experience and in depth skills in UNIX shell script, Perl or Python programming. Demonstrated experience in C/C++ development. In addition, knowledge of one or more of the following areas would be an asset: Tape drive and robotics hardware. Hierarchical Storage Management systems such as CASTOR, HPSS, dCache, SAM-QFS, etc. Backup/archival systems such as TSM. Large disk storage systems and/or global filesystems. Experience with databases and SQL. Linux cluster management and monitoring using Open Source tools (Puppet, Quattor, Cfengine, Kibana, Grafana, etc.) The technical competencies required for this post are: System software administration: it operations, problem management, service desk and incident management. Programming/Software development: solid knowledge of the linux operating system environment; design, creation, testing using C++, C, Python, Perl, scripting languages. Configuration management: change management, release management. Systems integration: systems installation/decommissioning. Application support: resolving issues, providing systems information.
