Introduction Mechanical technician in the Targets, Dumps and Collimators (TCD) section of the Sources, Targets and Interactions (STI) group within CERN's Engineering department. As Mechanical Technician you will join: The Targets, Dumps and Collimators (TCD) section of the Sources, Targets and Interactions (STI) group within CERN's Engineering department; the TCD section is responsible for the mechanical aspects of CERN's beam intercepting devices. Beam intercepting devices such as targets, collimators, beam stoppers and beam dumps are key components in CERN's accelerator complex. They are mechanical devices that are used to absorb and/or attenuate particles from the high-energy particle beams needed for CERN's experimental research programme as well as to generate secondary particle beams. Beam intercepting devices combine carefully designed structures required to absorb a high density of thermal energy with remotely controlled mechanisms needed to position them precisely and repeatedly under challenging operating conditions such as high temperatures, radiation and ultra-high vacuum. The increasingly high particle beam energy densities and intensities needed to ensure CERN's position as the world's leading particle physics research laboratory lead to unprecedented challenges in the design of new or upgraded beam intercepting devices, including in terms of the maintenance, dismantling and disposal. Functions As Mechanical Technician in the Targets, Collimators and Dumps section, you will be responsible for the construction, manufacture and assembly of new beam intercepting devices along with upgrades of the existing and future programmes beyond the LHC era. This will involve: Coordinating the maintenance of beam intercepting devices in CERN's beam installations. Designing and building specific, reliable tools for maintenance and repair work in radiation-controlled areas, which could require the use of remotely controlled devices. Preparing the documentation (drawings, maintenance procedures, engineering and technical specifications, etc.) relating to the equipment and filing it to produce a complete dossier. Contributing to the design and production of high-precision components and assemblies, in collaboration with engineers and other technicians within the section. Producing mechanical components in the workshop using milling, turning and drilling techniques. Coordinating the procurement of equipment, production monitoring and quality control, including for surface and heat treatments entrusted to internal CERN services or external contractors. Assembling and testing high-precision actuators and participating in their commissioning and maintenance. Designing and building prototypes in accordance with the section's strategic needs. Qualification required Higher technical diploma in the field of mechanics or equivalent. Experience and competencies The experience required for this post is: Experience in designing and building precision mechanical devices. Demonstrable experience in machining, assembling and testing high-precision mechanical systems and prototypes. Experience in reading mechanical design drawings and specifications in terms of tolerance. Experience with the main materials used in mechanics. Experience in using CAD systems. Experience with microelectromechanical devices, pneumatic actuator systems and position sensors would be an advantage. Mechatronics skills for designing equipment would be an advantage. The technical competencies required for this post are: Precision assembly and construction. Commissioning & maintenance of mechanical equipment & systems. Turning, milling, erosion, grinding. Gluing, welding, brazing: basic steel and aluminium welding skills would be an advantage. Use of numerical control & conventional machine tools. 3D & 2D technical drawing: knowledge of cad systems for designing equipment in 3d and of their use in relation to cnc machines would also be an advantage.
