Introduction Electrical/Electronics engineer in the Technology Department (TE), Electrical Power Converters Group (TE-EPC), Low Power Converters (TE-EPC-LPC). You will join The Technology Department (TE) responsible for technologies which are specific to existing particle accelerators, and specifically the Low Power Converter Section (TE-EPC-LPC (link is external)). Its members (around 20 electronic technicians and engineers) develop and operate specific power systems - in the range of few hundreds of Watts, up to several hundreds of kWatts - for magnets including those of the LHC injector chain and many LHC superconducting magnets. Functions As an engineer specialised in power electronics, you will be a member of the team responsible for the design, development, production and commissioning of the new power converters for the CERN coming HL-LHC project, which corresponds to a new phase in the LHC machine life. The High Luminosity-LHC will require many new converters, with very challenging performances required: four quadrant power converters type (up to ±2 kA), and also one or two quadrant, high current (up to 18 kA) power converters, all delivering output current controlled with a precision of more than 1 part per million ! You will: Participate to the technical reviews regarding the powering strategy for HL-LHC converters, taking into account the operation needs and conditions of the physics machine for proposing the most efficient solution. Elaborate the technical specifications (cahier des charges) of these new families. Choose and evaluate the possible topologies with regards to CERN constraints (low noise, high availability, low time to repair / exchange modules) and with regards to expected performances (high voltage loop bandwidth with adequate control and regulation of the power parts). On selected projects, and from the basis of the preparatory work presented above: Take the ownership on some selected projects, from the design up to the production phase. Mount the project structures, defining adequate steps and milestones for allowing a good control (time and budget) on projects to be launched. Design the converter, developing the electronic control cards, choosing power components, from active semiconductors up to magnetic components. Support the production and test by industry. Ensure the effective reception, integration and commissioning of the new converters families: their complete test at CERN, validating the final performances of the converters before its installation and its operation. Qualification required Master's degree in the field of Electrical or Electronics engineering, or equivalent. Experience and competencies The experience required for this post is: Initial Experience in the switching mode power converter design domain. Experience of operation, commissioning or maintenance of power systems would be an advantage. The technical competencies required for this post are: Design of switch-mode power converters: power topologies applied to high switching frequency topologies domains, in the power level of hundreds of Watts up to hundreds of kWatts. Design of embedded control system: development of electronics and use of cad tools for creation of schematics (e.g. altium designer). Design of regulation (closed loop system, digital and analog): knowledge of analogue regulation and control principles, good ability to use software packages like Simplorer, Matlab or equivalent. Project management: from the initial specifications to the final fine plan would be an advantage.
