Introduction

Surface Finishing Technician in the Technology Department (TE), Vacuum Surfaces and Coatings group (VSC), Surfaces Coatings and Chemistry Section (SCC).

As Surface Finishing Technician in the Technology Department (TE), you will join the Vacuum Surfaces and Coatings Group (TE-VSC) which is in charge of:

.The studies, design, technical validation, industrial procurement, installation and commissioning of the beam and insulation vacuum systems for the CERN accelerator projects and related R&D.

.The operation, maintenance and upgrade of the existing accelerators and of the CERN cleaning and coating facilities including their control systems.

.Within this group, the Surface Coatings and Chemistry section (SCC) is taking care of the surface and chemical analyses, the thin film coatings by PVD and surface finishing. The latter activity includes precision cleaning of parts for ultra-high-vacuum applications, electro-plating with several metals on accelerator components, electro-polishing and chemical polishing of complex geometries and finally maintenance works for the dedicated waste-water treatment plant.

Functions

As Surface Finishing Technician in the Surface, Chemical & Electrochemical Team, you will:

.Perform specialised surface finishing work on prototype and series equipment;

.Perform chemical and electrochemical analyses either to monitor production activities or as support to development;

.Develop and implement new chemical, electrolytic surface finishing processes;

.Take part in the maintenance of the present installations (finishing baths, waste-water treatment plant).

.Take part in the creation and implementation of procedures in the quality assurance program.

Qualification required

Higher technical diploma in the field of surface finishing or equivalent*.

*Please note that preference will be given to candidates with the above-mentioned qualifications: In principle consideration will not be given to applications from people with higher qualifications.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

.An initial experience in chemical/electrochemical surface finishing prototyping and series production.

Practical experience in following fields:

.Galvanic surface finishing workshop.

.Analysis techniques applied to surface finishing baths.

.Electrochemical characterisation techniques.

.Operation of a waste water treatment plant.

.Ultra-high vacuum technology, would be an advantage.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

.Knowledge of electro-chemistry: galvanic surface finishing workshop.

.Knowledge of inorganic chemistry.

.Knowledge of electro-chemistry.

.Knowledge of surface finishing: surface cleaning and electrochemical plating methods, including pulse plating.

.Chemical & electro-chemical analysis: knowledge of analysis techniques applied to surface finishing baths.

.Knowledge of electro-chemistry: knowledge of electrochemical characterisation techniques.

.Chemical & electro-chemical analysis: knowledge of operation of a waste water treatment plant.

.Knowledge of high vacuum production and measurement: it would be an advantage to have knowledge in the field of ultra-high vacuum technology.
