Introduction Applied Physicist or Computer Engineer in the Experimental Physics Department (EP), CMS Data Acquisition and Trigger Group (CMD). The successful candidate will work on the CMS Detector Controls System (DCS) in the PH-CMD group (CMS Data Acquisition and Trigger Group. The Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment (external link is cms.cern.ch) is one of the four experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS Data Acquisition and Trigger Group (CMD) has the major responsibility for developing, implementing, commissioning and operating the data acquisition (DAQ) and detector control systems of the CMS experiment. The group is also responsible for planning and coordinating the CMS detector controls system and for implementing, commissioning, operating and upgrading the centrally provided services. The DCS configures, controls and monitors the detector and infrastructure. It provides detector protection functionality and acts as an interface to external systems, such as LHC, and internal systems, such as the gas, PLC based detector safety system, etc. The DCS is a distributed system and based on a commercial SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system and using a powerful Web infrastructure for remote monitoring. Functions The successful candidate will work on the operation, support, maintenance, integration and further development the CMS DCS system, and in particular perform the following tasks: Development, configuration, commissioning and operation of the central DCS. Develop extensions and new functionality according to the needs agreed with the users. Participate in the consultancy, support and integration of the DCS systems of all CMS sub-detectors. Liaison with CERN services and projects, such as the Joint Controls project. Participation in the team of experts that assures the smooth functioning of the DCS 24/7. Qualification required Master's degree in the field of Physics, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent. Experience and competencies The experience required for this post is: Demonstrated experience in computing related to industrial control / supervision systems. Demonstrated experience in software engineering practices for all phases of the software lifecycle (e.g. configuration management, user requirements capture, coding, testing and validation, etc.). Experience in the operation of large and distributed DAQ or control systems. The technical competencies required for this post are: Overall architectural design of large control systems/Design of control systems. Configuration, programming and use of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Programming/Software development: advanced knowledge of programming languages (c++, java) and scripting languages. Use of Database software packages: e.g: oracle and web development with portal technology. Use of Scientific and Engineering software packages. Systems integration: including integration of software and industrial controls hardware.
